the celebrity diet due to its popularity among actresses like
Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Lopez. Even
Kate Middleton is said to be a fan of the Dukan Diet, which helped her quickly regain her figure after three pregnancies.
How does the Dukan diet work?
The idea behind the Dukan diet is similar to other
low-carb or high-protein diets, such as the Atkins diet or the ketogenic diet.
From a nutritional standpoint, the concept of weight loss is based on three principles:
- High protein intake
- Very few carbohydrates and fats
- Physical exercise
The high protein intake is meant to prevent muscle mass loss, especially during the "attack phase." Additionally,
dietary fibre in the form of bran is consumed to prevent potential constipation due to the lack of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
What are the four phases of the Dukan Diet?
The uniqueness of the Dukan diet is that it is divided into four phases. Each phase is characterised by a
specific meal plan. Additionally, light physical exercise or
walks of at least 20 or 30 minutes every day should be incorporated.
1. Attack Phase (1-10 days):
Only high-protein, low-fat foods.
You can consume unlimited foods, but from a restricted list of
70 foods.
The list mainly includes lean meats cooked without added fats, low-fat dairy products (less than 4 g/100 g of fat), and small amounts of oats or wheat bran.
No alcohol, fats, sugar, vegetables, or fruits.
In this first phase, it is possible to lose several kilos in a short time.
Very important: Pierre Dukan advises drinking plenty of fluids, especially in this phase. At least 1.5 litres of water or unsweetened herbal teas per day. Otherwise, the high protein consumption could cause kidney problems.
2. Cruise Phase (until reaching target weight):
In this second phase, the meal plan alternates between
high-protein foods and vegetables. However, only certain types of vegetables are allowed (no legumes).
The portion of oat bran is doubled.
Weight loss should be around 1 kg per week.
3. Consolidation Phase (10 days for each kilo lost):
In addition to vegetables and proteins,
one portion of fruit or two slices of wholemeal bread per day is allowed. One
portion of pasta, rice, or potatoes once a week is also permitted.
Additionally,
two completely free meals per week are allowed, provided they are not two consecutive meals.
A
strictly protein day per week should still be observed.
Further increase in the portion of oat bran.
4. Stabilisation Phase (indefinite duration, ideally forever):
In this phase, the focus is on
maintaining the results achieved. You must adhere to
one strictly protein day per week, along with a healthy and balanced diet and regular exercise.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement="middle" gap="10px" css="%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22padding-left%22%3A%2225px%22%2C%22padding-right%22%3A%2225px%22%7D%7D" el_id="barbab"][vc_column width="1/2" css="%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22border-color%22%3A%22%23057a2c%22%7D%7D" offset="vc_col-xs-6"][vc_row_inner content_placement="middle" css="%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22background-color%22%3A%22%23f5f5f5%22%2C%22min-height%22%3A%22300px%22%2C%22padding-top%22%3A%2220px%22%2C%22padding-bottom%22%3A%2220px%22%2C%22padding-right%22%3A%2220px%22%2C%22border-style%22%3A%22solid%22%2C%22border-left-width%22%3A%221px%22%2C%22border-top-width%22%3A%221px%22%2C%22border-bottom-width%22%3A%221px%22%2C%22border-right-width%22%3A%221px%22%2C%22border-color%22%3A%22_header_middle_text_hover%22%7D%7D"][vc_column_inner width="1/2" css="%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22background-color%22%3A%22%23f5f5f5%22%2C%22background-position%22%3A%22center%22%2C%22background-size%22%3A%22cover%22%2C%22background-repeat%22%3A%22no-repeat%22%2C%22margin-left%22%3A%2215px%22%2C%22padding-left%22%3A%2210px%22%2C%22padding-top%22%3A%2210px%22%2C%22padding-bottom%22%3A%2210px%22%2C%22padding-right%22%3A%2210px%22%2C%22border-left-width%22%3A%221%22%2C%22border-top-width%22%3A%221%22%2C%22border-bottom-width%22%3A%221%22%2C%22border-right-width%22%3A%221%22%2C%22border-color%22%3A%22_header_middle_text_hover%22%7D%7D"][us_image image="14283" size="full"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/2"][vc_column_text css="%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22color%22%3A%22_header_middle_text_hover%22%2C%22font-family%22%3A%22Arial%2C%20Helvetica%2C%20sans-serif%22%2C%22font-weight%22%3A%22400%22%2C%22font-size%22%3A%2224px%22%2C%22margin-top%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220%22%2C%22padding-top%22%3A%220%22%2C%22padding-bottom%22%3A%220%22%7D%7D"]

Is the Dukan diet suitable for everyone?
The answer is no.
Due to the high protein intake, the Dukan diet can be
dangerous for people with kidney problems. Additionally,
pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with diabetes, or those with heart issues should avoid this diet.
Vegetarians and vegans may find it particularly challenging to follow the Dukan Diet.
Dukan Diet: Yes or No?
The Dukan diet
allows for very rapid weight loss from the first phase. This, in itself, boosts motivation and enthusiasm.
If you have the right amount of willpower to stick to the allowed foods,
it is also a simple diet to follow, as there is no need to count calories or weigh food.
Another strong point of this diet is
the combination with daily physical exercise, which is not too strenuous and suitable for everyone.
However, many doctors and nutritionists view this diet critically, as the high protein intake
could lead to a range of dysfunctions or even kidney damage.
Another point to consider is that it is particularly
lacking in antioxidants and vitamins. The human body needs these elements to function properly and prevent premature aging.
Moreover, with the increase in uric acid levels in the blood, the body undergoes ketosis, which has a distinct odour. An unpleasant consequence is bad breath.
The general advice is to use a good dose of common sense in all important life choices and, for any doubts, to always consult your doctor and/or a nutritionist.
