Originating in the United States in the 1990s from a specialist in anti-tumour therapies and dietary control of hormonal responses, the
zone diet is currently followed by several athletes from the USA Olympic national team. But what are the zones? The zone is defined as the peak of both physical and mental efficiency that this diet helps to achieve and maintain. In practice, this psycho-physical well-being translates into a greater amount of lean mass compared to fat mass, an increase in endurance capacity, a significant increase in strength, and an overall satisfactory state of health. Mental efficiency is characterised by an increase in concentration, clarity, and attention.
Sears, the creator of the zone diet, starts from the principle that every human physiological function is controlled by hormones and that the state of health of our body depends on a correct hormonal balance. For this reason, the zone diet considers food as a means to control hormonal release. Through the adequate intake of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, it is possible to determine the correct hormonal responses, thus achieving an optimal state of balance and control over the various vital functions of the body. Food can therefore be a medicine or, if misused, a source of diseases.
Every human physiological function is controlled by hormones and the state of health of our body depends on a correct hormonal balance.
The zone diet starts from the quantification of body weight, the percentages of lean and fat mass, and the levels of physical activity practiced. After calculating the proteins to be consumed and considering that one should never go below 77 grams, the obtained amount should be divided into blocks of 7 grams. Therefore, we will have at least eleven blocks of 7 grams to be distributed across 5 meals: 3 at breakfast, 3 at lunch, 1 at snack, 3 at dinner, and 1 for a snack before bedtime. The calories consumed at each meal should derive at least 40% from carbohydrates, 30% from fats, and always 30% from proteins. The example refers, as obvious, to the minimum zone diet, suitable for individuals who, based on weight and percentages of lean and fat mass, require only 77 grams of protein daily.
Sausages, egg yolks, offal, and red meat should be avoided.
But which foods should be specifically chosen? Regarding carbohydrates, it is certainly preferable to consume those with a low glycemic index, such as all fruits and vegetables except for carrots, bananas, and raisins. It is better to avoid pasta, potatoes, bread, and rice, which have a high glycemic index.
As for proteins, the zone diet encourages the consumption of fish, chicken or turkey meat, low-fat cheeses, and egg whites. Lean white meats and low-fat cold cuts are also acceptable. However, sausages, egg yolks, offal, and red meat should be avoided.
Finally, regarding fats, the suggestion is to preferably focus on monounsaturated fats such as extra virgin olive oil, olives, and nuts. Butter, whole milk, and egg yolks, which contain arachidonic acid, should be avoided.
